Sci Tech Central explores coral reefs

Posted by Jennifer Cook on

WUCF TV is proud to announce a new program featuring the latest breakthroughs in science and technology.  Sci Tech Centralpremieres Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 8:30 p.m. and explores cutting edge technology, the innovators creating the startups of tomorrow and the mysteries of the scientific world happening here in Central Florida and across the country.

On the premiere episode, go inside America’s only living barrier coral reef, in the Florida Keys.  Explore the science working to confront an underwater crisis.

“There’s a global crisis right now occurring with coral reefs and their decline,” said Bill Causey, Regional Director for the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.  “We are already in a condition here with our reefs that makes them extremely vulnerable. So everything we can do as managers and as scientists to not only understand our reefs but to protect them for the long term - to make them more sustainable for the future - helps us.”

Did you know the Orlando Science Center is home to  a 6-foot model of a coral reef, made entirely out of cake and icing? Hear from the artist who created this breathtaking piece.

And travel to New York, where one community is harnessing an unusual creature to protect its shoreline.

SciTech Central premieres Thursday, Feb. 19 at 8:30 p.m. and will continue to air each Thursday on WUCF TV.
