WUCF TV’s SciTech Central explores the Air Potato

Posted by Jennifer Cook on

Central Florida biologists are putting a tiny creature to work in the fight against invasive plant life.  This week on SciTech Central, go inside the ground war on the Air Potato.

The plant harms native flora by depriving them of vital sunlight and is on the Florida noxious weed list.  “It climbs to try to get the most optimal area, which actually disrupts the habitat,” said Sherry Williams, Biologist for Seminole County Greenways and Natural Lands Division.  “When it shades up those habitats and kills off all the plants underneath it, then that habitat is no longer viable for the animals or plants.  So it really decreases the diversity of the area.”

SciTech Central travels to upstate New York where scientists are taking a pro-active approach to protect an iconic American lake.

And biological threats to our water supply are a major concern across the country.  See how researchers think they’ve found a way to prevent harmful algae blooms.

This episode of SciTech Central airs this Thursday, April 9nd at 8:30 p.m. on WUCF TV.
