Posted by Jennifer Cook on

Invasive species come in many forms and can become major problems.  This week on WUCF TV’s SciTech Central, learn more about the Giant African Snail, one that can grow up to seven inches!

“The things that make Florida different from other parts of the world will be kind of smudged and erased by invasive species from lots of other parts of the world that show up here,” said Dave Jenkins, University of Central Florida biology professor. “And so we will lose this unique corner of the world. That should matter to us fundamentally.

Did you know that the University of Central Florida is home to a bug closet?  The university has over 500,000 specimens, mainly focused on Central Florida.  SciTech Central will take you into the collect to see what and why they are collecting.

Next, go inside the only lab in the world dedicated to solving crimes against wildlife, the National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Laboratory.

Then, go inside the laboratory of a doctor working to stop the spread of a plague that’s killed millions of bats, an animal important to ecosystem.

This episode of SciTech Central airs this Thursday, October 1 at 8:30 p.m. on WUCF TV.
